Talking About Life

Talking About Life
By, Jake Gearhart

Meet Larry Robert Landis (AKA Grampie), age 70, and has an amazing backstory. He is 6 foot 1 and has silvery hair.  if you were to hear his voice it would sound would sound a little watery. He loves being around kids, such as me and my brothers, and we are really close. He is a very nice man who likes to talk a lot. what his free time is spending the day with my brothers and I or playing sports.
We were sitting in the office room of my house, Grampie, Evan and I. Grammie was cooking dinner in the kitchen, the smell of chicken drafted into the room. Evan was sitting in a chair across from Grampie and I. Grampie was wearing a navy blue Coast Guard shirt and loose Jeans. We had Evans iPad setup to record us. Evan would read off the questions, Grampie would answer, and I would jot down his answer, just as I did for Evans interview.
Question number one was, “Why did you choose to be in the Coast Guard?”
He responded with, “My brother Gary gave me the idea to join the Coast Guard in 1967. I joined the Coast Guard because of the Vietnamese War, if I didn't, then I probably would have been drafted into the American army.”
“There is a follow-up question to that question and it is, what did you do in the Coast Guard?”
He had a quick answer, “I made sure the reservists showed up on time. I also said, that I would be the one to promote people and train them. But when I did promote them I would have to make sure they were eligible for promotion first.
“Question number 2,” Evan said, “what was your first car, and why?”
Grampie replied with a simple answer and said, “It was a 1960 Volkswagen Beetle. My parents bought it for me for a really good deal.”
Evan read off my third question, “What was your childhood like?”
“My childhood was very fun, and there were a lot of other kids in My neighborhood that I could Hang out with. With my friends I played Cowboys, army, and rode bikes. And also, if my parents would let me, hI would go into caves with my friends and explore.”
“Jacob’s fourth question is,” this is my personal favorite question, it is, “what are you interested in and why?” The reason it was my favorite because of his response, which wasn’t very long though.
“I like having fun,” he replied, “by hanging out with my grandkids and playing pickleball with my friends. I also like to exercise by going down to the beach or the park.
“Jacob’s fifth and final question is, what do you do with your friends for fun?”
He answered with, “ I like cooking with my wife, (Grammie) and sometimes friends. I play cards, and know multiple different card games, such as golf, spoons, crazy 8’s, and casino.” but there’s so many more games he knows. “As I said in the last question, I like doing pickleball, I do that at Del Mar Park in Morro Bay. I love going to the beach, especially with my grandchildren.” Me, Max, Kaden, and our cousin Kari. “And I go on annual camping/fishing trips.” In which I sometimes tag along, ok, maybe once. Grampie started talking again, “And every time we go fishing, we catch at least two fish.”
Grampie has told me that he has lived a wonderful life. And I hope you all like him.

“Stay gold.” Is what johnny says right before he dies, we all kind of knew that Johnny was going to de at some point in the book. I thought he was going to come out of the hospital and get severely hurt in the rumble and get back into the hospital. But he didn't get out of the hospital. They did the rumble without him and the socs fled, after the rumble Ponyboy and Dally went to go see him. And he died right after he told Ponyboy to Stay gold.
